Port Chester High School students recently participated in a circuit activity in small groups to solve math problems in teacher Anton Raskin’s Advanced Placement Calculus class. Raskin placed the answer to each math problem throughout the classroom and challenged his students to look for the answers once they completed each problem. They continued the process until they got back to the problem they started from.

More than 6,500 students from across the state auditioned for the music festival at various solo and ensemble festivals this past spring. Throughout their studies, the fifth graders will experience how the Earth-spinning movement affects the appearance of sunrise and sunset. They will also calculate how fast the Earth spins in miles per hour and will investigate to understand why we do not feel the Earth spinning at such a fast speed.

Highlights of the 2021-2022 School Year

Please have students listen to announcements the first few days of school for sport specific meetings and information about practices. Finally, most of our students are active in extra-curricular activities, including band and orchestra, drama, choral groups, sports teams, yearbook, school newspaper and other clubs and groups. The Port Chester spring sports registration for the High School will be open from February 14ththrough the first week of official practices which start on March 14th. Sports being offered are Baseball, Softball, Track & Field, Boys Tennis, & Club Golf at the high school level. To introduce the complex concept to the school’s youngest learners, Waldmann compared it to algorithms that students use every day, including washing their hands, brushing their teeth and walking to school. At the end of class, the students gathered on the rug to review what they learned.

Maria added that her students’ ability to choose where they sit and get comfortable while reading promotes engagement and increases reading stamina. As she checks in on them, she also gets a sense of how they’re reading and where they can improve as a class over time. During the assemblies, they reviewed fire safety procedures, such as getting out of the house, calling 911, and stop and roll. They also learned about the fire trucks and their engines and the tools that firefighters use.

Thespian Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society to help fund the high school play, musical and other performing arts programs. Throughout the event – a family-friendly version of a murder mystery night – each participant received a character description and tasks to engage in, including talking to other characters, participating in a scavenger hunt and spreading a rumor. They mingled, completed their tasks and tried to figure out who committed the crime.

Based upon inquiries from staff, and in an abundance of caution, the District engaged in environmental testing at the King Street School. The testing was conducted by Enviroscience Consultants, an independent company that specializes in such testing. The findings for the school came back as normal and no corrective action was recommended by the consultant. Kristian Battell is an artist working and living in northern New Jersey, having recently completed a Master of Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

We are one of the few Westchester high school authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. College-level courses are offered in cooperation with the Westchester Community College Advanced College Experience Program and SUNY Oneonta. Because the substance was unidentifiable, the Port Chester Police Department was consulted. It has been brought to our attention that the water main work and fire hydrant replacement, being conducted near King Street Elementary School, may be the cause of the presence of coliform in two specific water sources in the school. The District has shut down these sources , out of an abundance of caution and will retest both sources on Monday. All other potable water sources in the school have been tested and there is no evidence of Coliform bacteria in other water sources. We will continue to keep you updated on the work being conducted by the water company in the area and the results of the tests that Port Chester School District will conduct.

The new Principals’ Promise Academy at Port Chester High School is giving students who have fallen behind on their work an opportunity to succeed. Thomas credited student Shirley Guzman, who serves as the editor-in-chief, for reviving the newspaper with her vision, determination and leadership. Gomez said the students compared their work to the work of surveyors and arborists, and he hoped that they would find the usefulness of mathematics in the world around them. As part of the lesson, the students measured the flagpole and the trees around it, as well as the height of the goal posts by the field.

They were also challenged to strike to a target by knocking down a pin from a distance. “All month, teachers and students have been reading about the various contributions of Hispanic Americans, as well as reading literature in both English and Spanish,” Principal Rosa Taylor said. As part of the assignment, the students folded their pieces of paper on both ends to make feet for their paper strip. Then, they made their paper strips into an arch, a zigzag, a curved line, a square and a mountain. They put glue on the feet of their paper strip, pressed them down onto the paper and watched how the paper strips transformed and interacted with one another. With adjusting the exposure triangle to get the correct exposure in their photography – a skill that will allow them to have maximum control over the images they create.

This year it has blossomed into a fully developed initiative, bridging crucial STEM instruction with language acquisition and critical thinking skills. Sessions last six weeks and take place in all four elementary buildings and at the middle school, with 250 students participating and another 10 cohorts starting in May. The concept began with what Felipe Orozco, the district's Director of ELLs and Bilingual Programs Felipe Orozco envisioned as a way to meet the needs of transitioning and expanding English language learners. Freshman Sayuri Galindo, who created a webpage that summarized five movies, said she enjoyed having creative control over the type of information she could include in her website. The project also allowed her to collaborate with others, problem solve and build on her knowledge. Doré described the production’s choreography as fun and inviting, the music as catchy and the costumes as colorful, detailed and creative. In addition to Doré, Veltri and the students, the production is made possible thanks to the technical direction of Zach Doré. Port Chester Middle School students will present “Seussical Jr.” as their musical production from Dec. 1-3. Under the guidance of theater director Julie Doré and musical director Rosemarie Veltri, the show features a talented group of 23 students in the cast and 15 in the crew.
